Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Update Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild Fresh Weapon to the Game

The seasonal game drop for Minecraft has arrived β€” and it features the initial fresh armament added to the title since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it could very well revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, particularly when you enjoy mayhem.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mounts of Mayhem drop also adds a host of fresh elements and enhancements focused on riding animals in the game. That central theme made the spear the ideal addition for this update, as the creators had already known it was the moment to introduce a new weapon.

"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a new weapon that would increase combat distance, and we envisioned it for fighting from atop a creature," noted a lead developer. "We experimented with a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also was visually fitting for the intended purpose."

If you're wondering whether fighting from a saddle means you can tilt at your friends on horseback, the response is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an offensive action perfectly suited for it.

"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest applications for the spear, and it's so much fun," the developer continues. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the quick stab, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you lower your spear and inflict more damage [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] ideal for knightly combat."

Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures

The wild enjoyment isn't limited to there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the wings and going out and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she teases.

In other words: Sky jousting is now possible, and it needs to become an competitive event right away.

Another key feature in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This aquatic being, which is based on the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be tamed and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it move you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also preserve your breath meter, so there's no requirement to come up for air for a breath.

The remaining new features are primarily things that want to kill you, as is the way of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, often with a Drowned on its back. If you are able to take care of the Drowned, though, you can claim the undead mount β€” or the regular one, for that matter β€” with a blowfish.

"We've pondered this issue on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the perfect moment to also unveil something for aquatic environments," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a several proposals for underwater mounts that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus design sketches looked striking, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also points out that there are actually two distinct kinds of undead nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] give some flavor to what you discover underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Other additions include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive undead archers that can withstand the sun, which means there's no escape from them if you find yourself in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another fresh creature. Camel husks have an excellent design that sees their bones protruding. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a analogous exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying zombie on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some much-anticipated adjustments to riding horses. Now, you can ford waterways while atop a horse. Also, high-tier barding is now available at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the best defense it is worthy of.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

In summary, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself β€” and the pandemonium it invites β€” would have seemed like a considerable upgrade. Throw in the Nautilus, and additional creatures trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.

The Mayhem Mounts content drop is out now for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
